But these Phnom Penh dental clinics are rewriting the script, turning dental dread into something closer to, dare we say… fun? Whether your little one needs a routine cleaning or a cavity fix, these spots know how to keep the tears at bay and the smiles coming.   Roomchang Dental Hospital Roomchang is the Rolls-Royce of dental care in Phnom Penh - sleek, high-tech, and surprisingly warm-hearted. Their pediatric team knows how to turn a potentially traumatic tooth tale into a smooth, drama-free experience. The waiting area is more boutique hotel than clinic, and the multilingual staff are masters of the gentle touch and soothing words. Parents rave about Roomchang’s all-in-one approach: preventive care, orthodontics, and even sedation options for the more complex stuff. If your kid’s got dental anxiety, this place is practically a spa day in disguise.   Malis Dental Clinic Malis Dental Clinic brings Japanese precision and Cambodian warmth to the dental game. At its Exchange Square branch, the vibe is calm and the staff are zen-like. From gentle cleanings to preventive checkups, everything is delivered with a reassuring smile and a steady hand. The clinic’s walls are alive with colorful animal murals that instantly brighten the mood and help ease little nerves. It’s a playful, welcoming space that feels more like a storybook than a dental office - perfect for kids who need a bit of visual magic to settle in. The team’s step-by-step explanations are a hit with curious young minds (and grateful parents), making Malis a great choice for children who need time and reassurance to warm up to dental care.   Panhavuth Dental Clinic Panhavuth is cozy, unpretentious, and refreshingly real. The team here doesn’t just tolerate kids - they genuinely enjoy working with them. Expect warm greetings, clear explanations, and a vibe that feels more like a friendly science lesson than a scary procedure. Parents love the no-fuss professionalism and the clinic’s knack for making dental care feel approachable. It’s the perfect spot for families who want quality care without the clinical chill. Pachem Dental Clinic Bright, bubbly, and totally kid-approved - Pachem is a hit with families. Pediatric care is front and center, with dentists who speak fluent “kid” and know how to keep things light. Case in point: the adorable green dinosaur-shaped dental chair that instantly puts kids at ease and turns treatment time into playtime. Sedation options are available for the more nervous kiddos, and the staff’s patience is legendary. Whether it’s a first-time visit or a cavity fix, kids leave smiling - and often clutching a sticker like it’s a badge of honor.     Jordan Petra Dental Clinic Jordan Petra is a hidden gem for families seeking gentle, personalized care. The cozy setup and soft-spoken staff make it a haven for kids who might be wary of the dentist’s chair. While not exclusively pediatric, the team is great at adapting to younger patients. • CamboKidz Guide to Summer Camps 2025

Our annual directory of fun and educational programs for kids in and around Phnom Penh during the school summer break The school year is winding down and parents planning to stay in Phnom Penh over the summer break, from mid-June to mid-August, are starting to think about summer programs for their little ones. Many schools operate on a limited capacity during the break, offering special day “camps” with instruction and supervised activities for children and teenagers. In addition, some of the city’s most esteemed sports academies, music schools and learning centers have their own tailored summer programs.   The camps typically run over several weeks and are priced and bookable on a weekly basis. For some, each day brings more instruction and progress toward mastering a skill. Others have themes that change – so your little one might learn all about dinosaurs during the first week, space exploration on week two, then maybe dabble in art on the third.   The majority of schools that offer summer camps let children of suitable age enroll, even if not registered at the school. This makes the camps an excellent opportunity for parents to try out a new school (or several schools) before committing to a full year.   You’ll find dozens of summer camps on our list. All include instruction in English or French, are suitable for both Cambodian and expat children, and are sortable by name, theme, organizer or start date.   CamboKidz offers online bookings for many of the summer camps that we list on our site. Look for the red “Book Now” button to secure a spot for your child. And whether you choose to pay online or cash on arrival there are no booking fees.   Our camp list keeps growing, so check back often.

  • 30 Great International Schools & Nurseries in Phnom Penh (2025)

Phnom Penh’s education landscape has improved significantly in recent years with new quality international schools added and existing schools improving their programs and facilities. Parents seeking a private education for their children now have a wide range of choices to suit their budget and curriculum preference. As part of our annual school survey, CamboKidz reviewed dozens of school brochures, spoke with parents of school-age children, and – as much as possible – toured the campuses of education centers throughout the city. Our shortlist of 30 international schools and nurseries, the ones that met our selection criteria and impressed us most, remains unchanged in 2025. There have been a few changes, however, as some of the schools and nurseries on our list have opened additional campuses or added grades since our last survey. More expansions are coming this year, and several new prestigious schools are slated to open their doors, adding even more options for local and expat parents. Click anywhere inside the green box to view the full list and comparison table There may be other well-deserving international schools that we missed. • 10 Free Outdoor Playgrounds for your Kids

Children play at Komsan Park playground, Aeon Mall 3 If there’s one thing every kid loves to do every chance they get, it’s going outside to play! While Phnom Penh does not have the over-the-top playgrounds you’ll find in the West or certain Asian capitals (we’re green with envy, Singapore), it does have a fair number of public outdoor playgrounds where your kids can gather, burn off energy and have fun. Here’s our roundup of 10 “essential” outdoor playgrounds in Phnom Penh with swings, slides and climbing structures – and all for free.   Komsan Park Occupying the roof of a shopping mall, this spacious outdoor play and activity area should be on every parent’s list. In addition to a decent playground, you’ll find a free-to-use splash pad, zipline and bouncy pads. Coconut Park Playground Sure it’s just two towers connected by a wobbly bridge, but your kid’s imagination will transform it into a magical castle or pirate ship. We love the wooded outdoor setting with clean bathrooms just a few steps away.   Meanchey Avenue Playground Still in mint condition, this bright and cheery addition to the playground scene is tucked away behind a retail center and easily overlooked. Pity.   Wat Phnom Playground A perfect place for parents to unwind after climbing to the top of Wat Phnom. The elements have done a number on the floor tiles, but the equipment is holding up.   Urban Village Playground The tiny playground here was a convenient stop for families visiting Factory Phnom Penh,  just a few steps away, so when it closed we were gutted. But now a new, bigger and better playground has been built on the site and we’re just hoping it will also remain open to the public. TK Avenue Playground A charming pocket-sized playground that is ideal for parents bringing their kids to the outdoor mall, or living nearby. Olympia City playground A small but fun playground that attracts an ever-changing group of toddlers as their parents go to and from the nearby retail and commercial buildings.     Kid Garden Botomvtey One of the biggest and busiest public playgrounds in the city, so it’s unfortunate that its maintenance budget is as sparse as its shade.      Takhmao Playground Playgrounds are even sparser once you leave the city center, but this riverfront outdoor park and play area is a long-time local favorite. Athina Kid Park This small and clean outdoor play area for the kids is located in one of the city’s biggest gated communities… but the playground is open to the public. Outdoor Playground Locations

Our annual directory of school and recreation programs in and around Phnom Penh during the summer school break With the school year coming to an end, parents are looking for fun and educational programs to keep their kids busy over the summer break. Fortunately, a growing number of schools and training centers in Phnom Penh offer day programs with instruction and activities for children and teenagers. While these are not “summer camps” in the traditional sense (there are no tents, campfires or marshmallow roasts), they all offer a supervised program or modified curriculum for kids during the summer school break, which falls between early June and mid-August depending on the school. The focus of these camps vary. Some are geared towards toddlers (lots of fun activities like singing, dancing and games), while others offer an instructional program for sports, music or stage. And some are aimed at helping kids catch up or get ahead in academics. But whatever the theme, all the camps seem to add an extra element of relaxed fun to the summer school break setting. • CamboKidz Guide to Winter Camps 2024

Our annual directory of school and recreation programs in and around Phnom Penh during the school winter break The school winter break is approaching and families not planning to travel are looking for activities to keep the little ones busy during the holidays. Many parents are opting for winter “camps”, which offer fun and educational programs to fill the time their kids would usually be in school.   Winter camps typically run morning and afternoon sessions from Monday to Friday with a packed agenda of activities for your kids according to the theme of the camp. Some camps are designed for budding artists, others focus on sports and team play, while still others may aim to give your child an academic leg up during the holiday.   Whatever the theme, your kids are going to enjoy the camp sessions and are sure to make new friends.   CamboKidz has gathered information from winter camps in and around Phnom Penh. All camps in our list offer instruction in English or French, and are suitable for both Cambodian and expat children, and are sortable by name, organizer, date and location.   And the more we look, the more winter camps we find, so be sure to check back often.

  • Nursery Schools Your Kids Will Love

Looking for a place to send your little ones who are too young for grade school? These Phnom Penh nursery schools put an emphasis on play-based learning and creativity for children under 5 years old. What’s more, is all of them offer half and full day programs with healthy lunches and some nap time to help children make the transition from home to a school environment. Note: We’ve updated this article and added new content Gecko Garden   This small nursery school applies a Waldorf-inspired learning method that helps foster children’s empathy, independence and imagination. Mixed-age classes allow children to learn from one another, with younger kids looking up to and imitating the older kids until it’s their turn to be the leaders and help their younger classmates. There is a real sense of family among the students and staff, and the school is rightfully proud of its beautiful outdoor activity area. Acacia International Preschool Get your kids off to a multicultural early start at this popular nursery school, which offers bilingual French and English instruction. The focus is on play-oriented learning, and your kids will have the run of the indoor and outdoor facilities. Parents are encouraged to come and join their kids for the many shows, carnivals and fun events that school hosts. The Rainbow House “Play, play, play” is the mantra at this small Reggio Emilia-inspired nursery school, where children are free to explore and learn for themselves, but also given a chance to join the group for staff-led singing and dancing, as well as fun and messy art projects. The emphasis on unstructured play – and an ever-changing assortment of toys and interesting objects – helps develop kids’ imagination and social skills. And they’ll have a blast climbing all over the wooden playground in the leafy outdoor yard. Lilliput Academy   Caring and attentive staff score top marks for this small nursery school and daycare, and give the place a warm and welcoming family feel. Your kids will enjoy participating in group singing, dancing, learning and games, and of course, colorful arts & crafts projects. A private chat group keeps parents attuned to all their kid’s daily activities. There is also a program for children with special needs. Sambo’s Tots   Whether you send your little one to attend their preschool program, or just drop in for one of their daily playgroups, sessions at Sambo’s Tots are always full of high-energy fun and activities. Cheery staff fill each session with music, educational games, puppet shows and creative arts & crafts. There is also an outdoor playground and sandbox for the kids to explore before and after class. This year, we've added five more nursery schools that we believe deserve an honorable mention.   Mulberry International Preschool This Reggio Emilia-modeled nursery school boasts super-cute purple uniforms and a signature busy baker program for your tots. The classrooms and play areas are top-notch, instruction is multi-lingual, and this is one of only a handful of places with a dedicated program and proper facilities for infants as young as 6 months.   Whizz-Kids Montessori Academy Let your kids learn about the world through play and exploration at this cute Montessori-based nursery school. Children split their time between the well-appointed indoor spaces and a safe enclosed outdoor play area, making new discoveries every day.   Orange Crest Preschool This will be the inaugural year for this Singapore-modeled nursery school and we’re excited to see what’s in store. We love the rich wood furniture and bookshelves, spacious grassy yard and outdoor play gym.   Play Space Montessori Having lots of room both indoors and outdoors is a definite plus for a Montessori setting, but so is having lots of interesting toys and activities for kids to do. Active tots with inquisitive minds will enjoy it here, and after making new friends they can stay on together for the first years of grade school.   Ikigai Kids There’s always something fun and interesting for your little ones at this drop-in daycare and nursery. The energetic staff here fill each day with art, music, dancing, cooking, exercise and even a bit of fun science. Each day brings new adventures, and there’s often a weekly or monthly theme. Conveniently, they offer half-day morning and afternoon programs, and stay open even during the school holidays.

Long-time Cambodia residents remember when the list of quality international schools could be enumerated in a single breath. But in the past decade a bevy of new international schools have opened, and existing ones have beefed up their facilities and curriculum, so that today parents have options to weigh. CamboKidz recently surveyed the Phnom Penh private education landscape, reviewing school brochures, speaking with parents of school-age children, and – as much as possible – visiting the campuses of international schools throughout the city. Here we present our shortlist of schools that impressed us most. There may be other well-deserving international schools that we missed. Let us know what you think by commenting in our Parent Forum .

  • Cool Ideas to Keep the Kids Busy over the Winter Break

The annual school winter break begins today ushering in the holiday season and leaving parents scrambling to find ways to keep their kids busy for the next three weeks. We have a few suggestions.   Go sledding and have a snowball fight Who says it never snows in Cambodia? They’ve obviously never been to Snow & Ice World in Sen Sok, where it’s so cold you can see your breath. The icy wonderland is full of fun winter activities for the kids, with slides, ice carousels and a field of powdery white snow. It is also home to the Kingdom’s only snowman, ever. The entry ticket comes with a rental parka and boots, but you’d be well advised to bring some extra layers and gloves if you plan to spend more than a few minutes in the frozen indoor themepark.   Meet Santa Claus and his friends Yes, Santa Claus is coming to Phnom Penh, and he’s bringing the missus. Starting December 18, the Once Upon A Christmas Camp is a five-day winter program for kids packed with fun and engaging holiday activities. Each day a new Christmas character will stop by and visit the kids. The RSVP list is rumored to include Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, Santa’s elves, and Elsa and Olaf from Disney’s Frozen.   Cool off in the pool, and learn to swim Japanese fitness center Gunze Sports is hosting swimming lessons for kids at its indoor pool in Borey Peng Hout over the winter break. Divided into two five-day courses, the lessons aim to help kids 5-12 years old overcome their fear of the water and – with the aid of a float board, master the basics of swimming. It’s a great way for your kids to cool off, burn some energy and make new friends.   Enjoy a White Christmas The chance on Phnom Penh getting snow for Christmas is remote, but you can still get into the holiday spirit at Factory’s two-day White Christmas event. The free weekend market features a food and gift vendors, a festive Christmas parade, live music performances and a screening of the children’s animated film “The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol” (check their film schedule or you might end up taking your terrified kids to “The Meg 2” screening by mistake). And be sure to stick around on Saturday for the free song and dance performance by students and staff of Singapore Global Community International School.   Send the kids to winter camp Lots of schools are offering full and half-day “camps” during the winter break and Mulberry International Preschool has packed its program with festive themes and activities. Split into three weeks, kids age 2-6 will join in on the fun making Christmas crafts, masks and holiday yummies. There will also be ice activities, a talent show, and movies & popcorn. Some expat parents might like that the school has scheduled the sessions so they don’t fall on Christmas Day, leaving time for the little tykes to open their presents.

  • Nursery Schools That Your Kids Will Love

Looking for a place to send your little ones who are too young for grade school? These five Phnom Penh nursery schools put an emphasis on play-based learning and creativity for children under 5 years old. What’s more, is all of them offer half and full day programs with healthy lunches and some nap time to help children make the transition from home to a school environment. Sambo’s Tots Whether you send your little one to attend their early-years school program, or just drop in for one of their daily playgroups, sessions at Sambo’s Tots are always full of high-energy fun and activities. Cheery staff fill each session with music, educational games, puppet shows and creative arts & crafts. There is also an outdoor playground and sandbox for the kids to explore before and after class. Gecko Garden This small nursery and early years school applies a Waldorf-inspired learning method that helps foster children’s empathy, independence and imagination. Mixed-age classes allow children to learn from one another, with younger kids looking up to and imitating the older kids until it’s their turn to be the leaders and help their younger classmates. There is a real sense of family among the students and staff, and the school is rightfully proud of its beautiful outdoor activity area. Acacia International School Get your kids off to a multicultural early start at this popular nursery school, which offers bilingual French and English (and a bit of Khmer) instruction. The early-years focus is on play-oriented learning, and your kids will have the run of the indoor and outdoor facilities. Parents are encouraged to come and join their kids for the many shows, carnivals and fun events that school hosts.

  • The Best Bookshops for Children’s Books

There is no better way to instill a love of reading - and get your child to sleep – than by reading children’s books at bedtime every night. But where to stock your ever-changing library of age-appropriate books? CamboKidz set out across the city to find the best bookstores for children’s titles so your little cutie can get a good night’s rest. Monument Books & Toys A long-running favorite among parents, this attractively designed bookstore is extra popular with kids because its huge selection of children’s books extends into a huge selection of children’s toys and games. The store stocks many quality English-language books for kids of all ages, including hard-to-find titles. And while prices tend to be on the high side, there are frequent sales with some real bargains to be found. Kinokuniya Quite possibly the largest bookstore in the Kingdom, the aisles of this branch of Japanese bookstore chain Kinokuniya are tightly filled with new books of every genre, and in many languages. The store has a large children’s book section, and one of the richest selections of manga in the city. You’ll also find children’s books and educational tools in other formats, including ebooks and interactive DVDs. Read & Play This small bookshop stocks a lovingly curated selection of fun and exciting titles for children of all ages, including pop-out books, coloring books and sticker activity books. It is also a place to find the most popular multi-volume children’s book sets. International Book Center (IBC) This famous local chain began as a book and stationery shop, but has since expanded to selling everything from office equipment to toys and sporting goods. There is a great selection of children’s books in English (and Khmer) to choose from and prices are usually very reasonable, even when not on sale. Some branches are much larger than others, but you can always browse their website for store availability or to order online. Maisy Bookshop & Gifts Kids love visiting this cozy little shop because its fun and colorful books – and toys – are all within reach. Maisy stocks an eclectic selection of high-quality children’s books and book sets, and it’s worth stopping by every so often just to see what’s new in stock.

  • 5 Toy Stores that Make Gift Shopping Easy

Seeing your child’s eyes light up when you bring home a new toy is one of the joys of parenting. And you don’t need to wait for a birthday or Christmas to surprise them with a toy that will delight them and fuel their imagination. So next time you’re looking for a special game, puzzle or toy for your little one (or a present for someone else’s little) be sure to check out these five Phnom Penh toy stores. Toys & Me With branches all over the city, you’re never far from Cambodia’s biggest chain of toy stores. The toys and games here are imported high quality originals, which usually translates into a higher price but you’ll also find plenty on sale. The toy giant also boasts one of the better online stores, letting you sort by toy brand, type or appropriate age, and offering free delivery in Phnom Penh on all orders $25 or more. Monument Books & Toys While it added “Toys” to its name years ago, many still think of Monument as just a bookstore. And that’s too bad, because in addition to its galaxy of book titles it also has an impressive selection of quality toys, games and puzzles for kids. Prices can be a bit on the high side, but the store often has fantastic sales and final stock bargains. And if you don’t see what you’re looking for on their shelves, ask them about ordering it for you. Cambodia Knits Parents will ooh and aah at all the adorable crochet toys they’ll find in this small shop on a quiet street in Toul Tompoung. The handmade toys, dolls and sleep buddies – crafted with love and care – are produced as part of a social enterprise that works with local women to provide employment and produce unique, high-quality toys with a distinctive Cambodian character. Whether you buy a cuddly sleeping tiger for your toddler or a hand-knit Sambo elephant for yourself, you’ll feel great knowing your purchase helps support marginalized communities in and around Phnom Penh. Game Box What started as an online store has finally opened as a brick-and-mortar showroom in Tuol Tompoung. The shelves here are stocked full of your favorite board games, dice and card games, role-playing games and puzzles – and at prices that will tempt you to load up. The store is also a hub for the local boardgaming community and regularly hosts gaming events for teens and young-at-heart adults. 12 Leap Toys Shop You’ll find many of the same toys here that you find in the larger toys stores, but at better prices. The shop’s shelves are stocked from floor to ceiling with toys and games for kids, and you might even spot a few hard-to-find toys in their collection. Also worth checking out: International Book Center (IBC), with branches throughout the city, has a small selection of toys, puzzles and games at reasonable prices. Aeon department store, which anchors each of Phnom Penh’s three Aeon malls, has a much larger variety of toys for all ages and often a few goodies in the bargain bins. But if you’re looking for a real bargain – head to Orussey Market or Street 163 just south of the Russian Market, where cluttered stalls sell many of the same toys (and knock offs) that you’ll find at the bigger stores, but at a fraction of the price. It’s a great place to pick up sets of plastic bath toys, beach toys and building blocks.

  • Spooktacular Halloween Ideas for Kids

Halloween is just around the corner and if your little ones love to dress up in costumes (of course they do) then you’ll be glad to know Phnom Penh has all sorts of spooky activities to get them into the Halloween spirit. From costume contests and trick-or-treating to haunted houses and decorating creepy cupcakes, there are plenty of kid-friendly Halloween activities and events for your little ghosts, witches, vampires and pirates. Here are a few worth checking out. Enter the haunted house… if you dare If your kids missed last year’s haunted house at Factory Phnom Penh (which was totally awesome we might add), it’s back again this year and bigger than spookier than ever. Set in the converted warehouse of an old garment factory, the HellKnoween Haunted House is a spine-tingling immersive experience with eerie lighting, creepy props and an army of ghosts, ghouls and restless spirits wandering its darkened corridors. The scares could be bit much for younger kids, but older children are going to love it (and want to go again). The haunted house is open on October 20-22, 27-29 + 31, with tickets $4 for RIP entry and $8 for VIP entry. Get a flying start with Halloween games Your kids don’t need to wait till Halloween weekend to get into the holiday spirit. Fly Phnom Penh is celebrating its 5th year anniversary with a two-day party full of Halloween-themed games and activities. Visit the trampoline park on Saturday, October 21 or Sunday, October 22 and bounce all over place as usual, then head to the nearby free games station where you’ll find a Halloween take on classic carnival games, like pumpkin bowling, witch hat ring toss and paper plane eye shoot. Watch a Halloween cosplay talent show Get into costume and head down to Midtown Mall on Sunday, October 22 to watch or join one of the biggest cosplay events of the year. You’ll find your favorite characters from popular movies and TV shows walking around the mall. And at 3pm the Halloween cosplay talent show kicks off. Expectations are high. Midtown Mall has invited members of Phantoms Cosplay to join – and these seasoned cosplayers take it to a whole other level. Stick around after the costume show for some Halloween-themed games and trick-or-treating for the kids. Decorate creepy monster cupcakes What better way is there for kids to conquer their fear of being eaten by monsters than to eat the monsters first? Zabolicious Bakery is hosting a monster cupcake decorating party for kids to turn ordinary cupcakes into spooky monster cupcakes. The kicker: once they’re done decorating, they get to eat the (surprisingly tasty) monsters. Choose from three sessions: Friday, October 27 for kids age 5-7 ($15) to decorate cupcakes; and Saturday, October 28 and Sunday, October 29 for kids age 7-12 ($18.5) to bake and decorate cupcakes. Just be sure to pack an apron or old shirt for your kid to wear because things are gonna get messy! A Halloween party for tots Sambo’s Tots is hosting a FREE kids party on Saturday, October 28 to celebrate Halloween (and the preschool’s 14th birthday). The fun starts at 9 am with Halloween-themed face painting, arts & crafts, music, singing, fun and games – as well as birthday cake and tasty cupcakes for the kids. The crew at Sambo’s Tots really know how to throw a kids party. For even more fun and photo ops, bring your little monster all dressed up in their way-too-cute Halloween costume. Join a spooky Halloween party You’ve probably already visited Khraft arts & crafts store to buy materials for your kid’s Halloween costume, so now’s the chance for your kid to show off your creation – and maybe even win a prize. Head to Khraft on Saturday, October 28 for all sorts of Halloween fun and games. Get your little ghouls and goblins up early because this party starts at 10am and runs until 5pm – and it’s free to join. There are games to play, a crafts station to make creepy Halloween decorations, and a photo booth to capture the holiday spirit. The main event is a colorful Halloween costume contest with a prize going to the best outfit. Catch a kids flick and other Halloween freebies Head to Exchange Square on Saturday, October 28 where Legend Cinemas is offering a free matinee viewing of The Super Mario Bros. Movie at 2pm. That may not be very Halloweeny (unless your kid comes dressed up as Mario) but you’ll find plenty of fun and spooky activities throughout the mall to give your kids a wholesome Halloween experience. Mall early birds can get in on a free Halloween kids coloring, drawing and crafts session that runs from 9:30am-11:30am, and still have time to catch the mall’s free face painting and balloon twisting station, which stays open until 12:30pm. Take those face-painted kids over to Kids Park, where they can run around the colorful indoor playground for (yes, you guessed it) free. Or pop into the Hard Rock Cafe for lunch, where kids eat free for every adult meal ordered from 12pm – 1:30pm during a lighthearted sing-a-long performance by Mimi and the Merrymakers. The restaurant is also hosting a Halloween costume contest – with prizes for the cutest trick-or-treat outfit. Finally, sit back in a reclining cinema chair and relax for 90 minutes while your kid memorizes every line of Super Mario Bros. to recite verbatim when you get back home. Dress up and trick-or-treat Last year’s family Halloween Night Market at Coconut Park was a spooktacular success and this year’s promises to be even better. The food, live music and performances, games and fun activities are all back. But this year the costume parade and contest – which offers prizes for the best dressed – has added another category: best pet costume. So if your kid’s home-sewn pumpkin outfit doesn’t clinch first prize, your poodle’s Batman outfit just might. There is a $1 admission fee for adults (kids 12 & under enter free), and kids in costume can trick or treat the Night Market vendors and take home a bag full of goodies. Make some spooky treats You don’t need an excuse to take the kids to Funmily – you know they’re going to have a blast in the indoor playground – but Saturday, October 28 and Sunday, October 29 will be extra fun-tastic with a Halloween-themed workshop. Your kids will make some spooky snacks including chocolate spiders and mummified hot dogs – and can take them home after or eat right there on the spot. It’s $8.9 per child (or $5.9 if you pre-book) including all ingredients. Turning up in a costume is encouraged but not required. Join a spooky sing-a-long Mimi and the Merrymakers will be at Farm to Table on Sunday, October 29 to entertain your family with a wholesome medley of silly fun and slightly spooky children’s songs. The first set starts at 4 pm. Arrive early and give your kids a chance to explore the restaurant’s rustic outdoor play area. Stroll the creepy costume catwalk Funderland is having a Halloween fashion show on Sunday, October 29 so don’t be surprised to find little witches, pirates, ghosts and devils parading the indoor playground’s makeshift runway. Prizes will be awarded for the best costume, and kids get $2 off admission just for showing up in a Halloween outfit. You’ll find details of all these Halloween events in the CamboKidz Events section.

  • What’s On (for Kids) in Pchum Ben

Pchum Ben is Cambodia’s biggest annual religious ceremony, marking the 15 days each year that Yama, the King of Hell, opens the gates to his realm and allows spirits to roam the land of the living. While the first 12 days of Pchum Ben are relatively subdued, the country grinds to a halt during the final three days of the festival (October 13-15 this year), when Cambodians flock to the countryside to visit their families and make offerings at the local pagodas. If you’re staying in Phnom Penh during these three days, you’ll find the roads eerily quiet, tuk tuk drivers scarce, and most business and restaurants shuttered or operating with a skeleton crew. CamboKidz checked around town to see what’s open during Pchum Ben. Here are a few fun ideas on how to enjoy the holiday weekend with your kids. Go Swimming: Escape the heat and cool off in one of the city’s hotel swimming pools. Many of Phnom Penh’s hotels offer pool day-passes to non-guests (often at a small charge, or with a minimum purchase of food and drink). If you’re looking to make an entire day out of it, you’ll want to pick a swimming pool that has cabanas or shaded loungers, a wading area for the kids, and a bar or cafe attached that will deliver food and drinks to you poolside. Recommended: Palace Gate Hotel Jungle Addition The Bale Phnom Penh The 252 Make an Even Bigger Splash: For an even wetter Pchum Ben weekend, head to one of the city’s water parks. Garden City Water Park is a bit of a hike, but well worth the effort for its giant twisting and turning slides, speed slides and lazy river. For something a bit closer to home, head to Water Garden at Aeon Mall Sen Sok, where they turn on the taps at 10 am sharp and crank up the foam cannon once it gets busy. Both water parks have wading areas suitable for smaller children. Garden City Water Park Water Garden – Aeon 2 Chill Out in the Park: Take in the fresh air and greenery at one of the city’s parks, which remain open throughout the entire holiday. Keep in mind that parks with pagodas or shrines – such as Wat Botum Park – will be buzzing with vendors selling food, flowers and incense to Cambodian worshippers. Visiting during the morning rush will help your kids better understand Pchum Ben and Khmer culture. Wat Phnom Wat Botum Park Sisowath Riverside Park For a bit of serenity, head to the multi-use green spaces on Koh Pich, which also have food and activities for the whole family. Coconut Park Treellion Park Hit the Mall: While the city might be a ghost town during Pchum Ben, its major malls teem with life. Families – often in groups three generations thick – arrive early and spend the day in the air-conditioned food courts, arcades, indoor playgrounds and cinemas – which remain open throughout the entire holiday. Recommended: Aeon Mall Sen Sok City Aeon Mall Meanchey Chip Mong 271 Mega Mall Dive into a Ball Pit: Most of Phnom Penh’s indoor playgrounds are located in malls and will be open during Pchum Ben, so all your kids really need is a pair of socks to have fun. They’ll have a blast climbing the padded equipment, scurrying through tunnels and sliding into ball pits. Recommended: Doozii Funderland Kids Park Kmeng Land Putt Putt for Fun Fun: Birdie’s, the outdoor mini golf course in leafy Treellion Park, is fun any day of the year, but come during Pchum Ben and you’ll enjoy a 15% discount. Sink a hole-in-one on any of their 18 par-3 holes and you’ll win a free drink (that’s a beer for mommy and daddy, or a soda for the kids). After the game the family can hang out by the club house and play boardgames or try out their giant Jenga set. The regular ticket price is $6 for adults and $4 for kids, but if you’re heading there during Pchum Ben you can get in on their special offer: $15 for one round of mini golf and all-you-can-eat brunch at The Glasshouse restaurant (Sat & Sun only). Birdie's Mini Golf The Glasshouse Tuck into a Sunday Brunch: The Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh is offering 50% off Sunday family brunch at its Market Cafe Restaurant & Lounge during the month of October. And yes, the offer includes the final day of Pchum Ben, October 15! The buffet-style brunch is more than just an impressive spread of Western and Asian dishes in stylish surroundings. It includes free admission to a children’s play area operated by Funderland, with hilarious clowns, and free balloons and face-painting for the kids. The brunch runs 12pm – 3pm, giving you plenty of time to fill your tummy and relax to live music while your kids play. After discount, the net cost is adults $40, kids $12, and free for children 5 years and under. Call or message (phone/Telegram) +855 23 600 1234 for details or to make a reservation. Cast a Line: The fish are biting throughout the Pchum Ben holiday, so why not take the family out and cast a line? Phnom Penh Fishing Tours still has a few spaces on its charter boat, which leaves the city around 9 am and heads upriver to all the best fishing holes, returning by 5pm. The cost depends on the size of the group, and includes fishing rods and equipment, bait and beverages. For a relaxed fishing experience within the city limits, head to picturesque Samathi Lake Resort, where tilapia and carp can be fished from the resort’s dock. It’s $5 to fish, including a rod and bait, and you only pay for the fish you keep. Phnom Penh Fishing Tours Fishing @ Samathi Lake Come Face to Face with a T-Rex: If your child’s first big word was “Tyrannosaurus” you owe it to them to visit Dinosaurs Alive, a fun and educational dinosaur themepark just across the bridge in Chroy Changvar. Walk, hop on a toy train, or peddle a boat to see the life-sized dinosaurs that populate this jungled park. We have been assured that the dinosaurs are staying in for the holiday, and ticket prices remain the same: Adults $8, Children $5, and kids under 90cm free. Dinosaurs Alive Mix it up a Little: Urban Space & Playground will stay open during the Pchum Ben holiday, giving you one destination with a bit of everything for your kids to try. There is a cafe with indoor and outdoor seating where parents can relax while keeping an eye on their kids. Your little ones will want to explore the whole complex, which includes an indoor playground full of toys, an outdoor playground with slides and a tree fort, and a swimming pool. Urban Space Playground & Cafe Dance on Wheels: Bring the whole family to the CIS Roller Dome on Koh Pich during Pchum Ben for public skate sessions that pay homage to the roller discos of the ‘70s and ‘80s. Lace up a pair of retro-cool four-wheeled rollerskates and glide around the air-conditioned rink. The groovy tunes, colorful lights and rink-side snack bars add to the fun and (for some parents) nostalgia. Public skates are set for 12pm to 6 pm on Oct. 13, and 12pm to 6:30pm on Oct. 14-15. Rollerskating @ CIS Roller Dome Workshop by the Park: Head over to the Ground Market on October 14-15 where dozens of local and artisanal vendors are set up along pathways in a landscaped urban park, and a series of special Pchum Ben workshops will be held in its indoor space. Bond with your kids by enrolling together in the fun and interesting DIY crafts workshops (some are free) that will show you how to make your own scented candles, soap, origami and sleepy elephants chandeliers. Check the schedule for workshop times and fees – and to see what goodies you get to make and take home. Stick around till evening for the free jazz performances. There will also be station with free activities for the kids from 10am – 9pm on both days. The Ground Market Learn to Fly: If your kids are bouncing off the walls at home, then you’ll love this. Fly Phnom Penh, the capital’s premiere trampoline park, is staying open for all of Pchum Ben. So let your kids jump, bounce and fly for an hour, or all day long if you like. A one-hour pass for “Little Flyers” under 120 cm is $6, and an unlimited day pass costs $12 during the holiday. Fly Phnom Penh
