About
This museum contains a stunning display of Khmer history with statues, figurines, bas reliefs and artifacts from all periods of Khmer history. There are some 14,000 items in total, though not all are viewable as several sections of the museum are closed or under construction.
While the museum is not to be missed, it does take a lot of flak from foreign visitors over its steep entry price and poorly labeled artifacts (the conspicuous absence of descriptions on the exhibits may simply be a ploy to rent out $5 audio guides). Licensed tour guides are also available for hire, and can provide knowledgeable histories and explanations of the exhibits in several languages.
The museum is housed in a beautiful colonial building inspired by local temple architecture. Its carefully tended gardens are tranquil and worth a wander.
Bags must be checked at the door and photography is prohibited in the museum galleries.
