About
The traditional shadow puppet shows held at this small, unassuming stage on the grounds of the National Library are enjoyable to watch whether you're 7 or 70 years old.
Khmer shadow puppets are crafted from cow hide and come in two forms, both of which are used in the performances. The larger "sbek thom" are panels over a meter high on sticks that often depict an entire scene including the background. The smaller "sbek touch" are the figurine puppets with moveable parts used to depict characters in stories.
All shows include a shadow puppet show, while some nights also include a short performance by the royal ballet or a traditional music drama. The plays are performed in Khmer with English and French subtitles.
