About
This is a small park squeezed between two busy lanes of traffic and is a popular place for a walk or run. A smooth tiled walking path runs the length of the park and there are benches to sit on.
The park is separated from its namesake, which is situated on an island in the middle of a busy traffic roundabout at the intersection of Norodom and Sihanouk Blvd. The 20-meter high Angkorian-style monument is one of Phnom Penh's most recognizable landmarks, and was built to commemorate Cambodia's independence from France in 1953.
More accessible is the monument to the king under whose reign Cambodia achieved independence. Completed in 2013, the Norodom Sihanouk Memorial is a bronze statue of the late king housed beneath a stupa with a golden spire.
The park attracts a few tourists during the day, but really only comes to life as the sun goes down. There are benches throughout, and vendors along the side of the road offer food and drink.
